The Invisible Porch
The clients needed a porch to make the entrance to their beautiful listed cottage work better for them. Although the porch is small in size, it represents a prominent part of the façade and like any other project, involved a whole process of feasibility study, preparation of brief and understanding of the planning requirements.
The project is the result of the collaboration and dialogue with the clients and careful study of suitable material and techniques. The aim is an imaginative and contextual approach to respect the history and scale of the old cottage with a contemporary and high quality design.
The use of frameless glass creates a light, transparent and understated structure, almost invisible in front of the main façade. This uncompromisingly modern element reveals the beautiful characteristics of the original house, as well as creating a comfortable place to be used by the family; an efficient thermal link between the out and in.
In our view, adapting contrast with the historic precedents, instead of attempting to simply copy them, can produce successful architecture that respects its surroundings. A small architectural project can also adopt the same principals.
